Review on PET Imaging for Neurological and Psychiatric Conditions

By the end of this session the attendee will:

  • Review the basic physical principles of PET imaging and the distinction between PET and SPECT
  • Describe the FDG metabolic patterns of common neurological and psychiatric diseases including depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, stroke, traumatic brain injury
  • Compare the relative advantages and appropriate indications for PET-MRI versus PET-CT scan

An Integrative Approach to Assessing Neurocognitive Function

By the end of this session the attendee will:

  • Compare evidence-based non-pharmacologic interventions to boost cognition, mood, and overall wellbeing
  • List the indications and common off-label uses for prescription cognitive-enhancing medications
  • Identify with vitamin and herbal supplements that have been shown in randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trials to show efficacy for improving energy, mood, attention and memory
  • Apply the evidence supporting multi-domain interventions to improve brain health

Meet our Presenters

Andrew Newberg, MD

Dr. Andrew Newberg is the director of research at the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health and a physician at Jefferson University Hospital. He is board certified in internal medicine and nuclear medicine. He also used neuroimaging research projects to study aging and dementia, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, depression, and other neurological and psychiatric disorders. Dr. Newberg's research has been featured in Newsweek, the Los Angeles Times, and Huffington Post. Additionally, Dr. Newberg appeared in "The Story of God with Morgan Freeman" on the National Geographic channel.

Mijail Serruya, MD, PhD

Dr. Mijail Serruya is assistant professor at the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health and a board-certified neurologist at Jefferson University Hospital. Dr. Serruya is a trained specialist in behavioral neurology who is familiar with the current clinical standard-of-care, as well as the dynamic landscape of peer-reviewed translational neuro-rehabilitation.
