The Marcus Institute’s own Reina Marino, MD was featured in an article for The Health Nexus last week on nutritional supplements and how we can best boost our immunity during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The article focuses on myths and misconceptions surrounding methods to improve immunity, especially supplements, their viability, and who should really be taking them. Dr. Marino emphasizes that the best way to get your daily dose of vitamins and minerals is a healthy, well-rounded diet, and she provides context as to why unregulated supplements can be non-effective at best, and harmful at worst.
Dr. Marino, as well as other contributors to the article, stresses that even probiotics, which have been shown to help decrease respiratory tract infections, cannot be promoted has a treatment for coronavirus.
Although it may seem trite, a good night’s sleep is emphasized for its importance in improving immune health. When we sleep, our body produces cytokines, which are proteins that drive inflammation during infection.
The article’s conclusion is as simple as this: eat right, sleep well, and be active.
