of Integrative Medicine
April 30, 2021
On May 20-22 we will be hosting the 2nd Annual Advances in Mind-Body Medicine Conference, a virtual CE/CME event designed for healthcare professionals interested in using integrative mind-body approaches to providing patient-centered care. In the lead up to the conference we will be sharing some insights from our speakers on what drew them to integrative medicine, and their perspective on health and the future of health care. In this second installment we spoke with speaker Dr. Sara Gottfried*, board-certified physician and New York Times bestselling author. Dr. Gottfried serves as the Director of Precision Medicine at Marcus Institute of Integrative Health.
Q: How has your perspective on health changed in the last year/since COVID-19?
A: COVID-19 ultimately advanced the adoption of telemedicine and digital health. Let’s just say that before COVID, the pace of adoption was progressing at a glacial speed. I’ve always used telehealth but was thrilled to see this method of serving patients broaden in a way that is so much more convenient and widely accepted. Additionally, it’s lovely to see patients more motivated to query what they can do to improve immunomodulation, for which integrative medicine is uniquely suited.
Q: What is one piece of advice that you give to every patient?
A: I ask every patient what they want their health for, i.e., what do you believe is the purpose of your health? The advice I give every patient is to drink a functional smoothie every morning and let’s make it precisely personalized to you. I explain that it’s an important bridge from their starting part to a more resilient sense of health, it's more convenient, and addresses common micronutrients gaps that your gut may need.
Q: Tell us a little about your conference presentation, “The Role of Stress and Inflammation on Immune Health”.
A: We all know that stress affects health, immune function, and risk of disease. The question is, how? In this lecture, I will provide the latest synthesis of the ways that stress impacts immune homeostasis and what can be done about it. You’ll learn evidence-based ways to promote immune resilience and modulate inflammation for patients who experience toxic stress. You’ll also review integrative approaches for viral infection and optimal vaccine response, and a discussion of post-Covid syndrome.
